Christopher Deedes

Christopher Deedes is a one-man show.

Equally passionate about gardening and photography, he is equally devoted to each of these passions. In beautiful South West France where he has retired, he and his wife Sally plant and grow most of the very vegetables, fruit and flowers that form the subject matter of his work. The discipline and rigour he acquired while serving in the British Army for 32 years are the perfect complement to his innate sensitivity and sense of aesthetics.

 

Working in black and white, Christopher photographs the fresh subjects

in his studio, using only natural light, then prints on watercolour

paper which he first coats with a silver gelatin photographic

 

emulsion. The resulting art form is interestingly disconcerting,

soft enough to be perceived as a pen and ink rendering or a

watercolour and sharp enough to be appreciated as an art

photograph.

Each piece is numbered and signed, the smaller format of

30 x 37 cm, in a limited series of 12 and the larger format,

50 x 61 cm in the exclusively limited number of 3. Trained

at the Somerset College of Art and Technology, he specialised

in black and white conventional photography and gained the

Licentiateship of the Royal Photographic Society. Invited

by the Société des Artistes Français to exhibit at the Salon

2005, he was awarded a Bronze Medal. Since 1986 he has

exhibited extensively throughout South West France as well as

London, Paris, New York and Geneva.

Christopher Deedes, sème, récolte et immortalise l’éphémère.

Passionné des plantes et de la photo, il est tout aussi dévoué au jardinage qu’à la prise d’images.

Dans le magnifique Sud Ouest français, où il s’est installé depuis quelques années, il cultive avec sa femme Sally ses sujets de prédilections, fleurs, fruits et légumes qu’il photographie en noir et blanc dans son studio attenant au jardin. La rigueur et la discipline acquises tout au long de ses 32 ans de service au sein de l’armée britannique sont en parfait équilibre avec sa grande sensibilité et son sens de l’esthétique.  

Christopher se sert uniquement de lumière naturelle puis il imprime de manière conventionnelle sur du papier aquarelle épais, fabriqué à la main, qu’il enduit d’une émulsion argentique à coups d’un gros pinceau. Le résultat est tout à fait époustouflant : une profondeur artistique qui nous laisse perplexes – aquarelle ou encre de Chine ? –  et une netteté surprenante qui traduit bien la photo d’auteur. 

Chaque tirage est numéroté et signé, le format de 30 x 37 x cm en série limitée de 12 exemplaires et le grand format de 50 x 61cm, plus exclusif encore, en seulement trois exemplaires.

 

A l’issue d’une formation spécialisée sur 4 ans qu’il entreprend en 1992 au Somerset College of Art and Technology, Christopher Deedes obtient le diplôme du Royal Photographic Society de Bath,Royaume Uni.

Invité par la Société des Artistes Français à exposer au Salon 2005, il remporte une médaille de bronze.

Christopher a exposé dans tout le Sud Ouest français ainsi qu’à Londres, Paris, New York et Genève.
